Serie D/E: storia del Vado - La Coppa Italia 1922
Il 1922 diede alla luce una di quelle competizioni che
ancora oggi è fulcro dell'attività calcistica nazionale:
la Coppa Italia. E' vero, negli ultimi anni questo trofeo è
andato via via sbiandendosi, diventando vetrina neppur
troppo prestigiosa per i rincalzi. Ma il fascino storico
della Coppa nazionale lo si può rivivere andando a scorrere
quell'albo d'oro che, come tutti i calciofili avranno avuto
occasione di scorgere negli album di figurine, vede proprio
nel 1922 il trionfo del Vado, una squadretta militante
allora in Terza Divisione. Fu un successo molto apprezzato
quello vadese, che come ebbe a
scrivere al tempo la Gazzetta dello Sport, fu «la vittoria
della volontà e della giovinezza sulla tecnica». Sì,
perchè l'ultimo avversario dei rossoblù fu nientemeno che
l'Udinese. Ma andiamo a ripercorrere con ordine le tappe
della ormai leggendaria affermazione del Vado, cominciando a
conoscere tutte le protagoniste di quello storico primo
trofeo:

Come potete notare, il lotto delle partecipanti incluse
praticamente solo squadre del Nord e del Centro Italia. Fu
un sintomo chiaro di come quel calcio fosse ancora nell'età
dei pionieri, ma il Vado seppe far fronte a quelle squadre
che poi sarebbero diventate l'èlite del calcio italiano
entro breve, facendo sognare così un intero paese...
...La prima giornata della Coppa si svolse il 2 aprile
del 1922, e il Vado superò a fatica la Fiorente Genova col
punteggio di 4-3.

Sorteggiato per il
passaggio diretto del turno: Pro Livorno.
Molti furono i derby in quei campi di periferia, dove la
polvere e il sudore dei calciatori cominciava ad attirare
discrete folle dietro le sgangherate recinzioni. Ma il
meccanismo della competizione, ancora non ben oleato, portò
a situazioni paradossali, come sorteggi per il passaggio al
turno successivo di alcune squadre ( vedi Pro Livorno) o
"magiche" sparizioni e apparizioni in tabellone (
vedi Libertas Firenze), come vedremo nella terza parte di
questo racconto. Tanti furono quindi i fattori che resero
speciale quel primo trofeo, ma il più bello sarebbe ancora
dovuto venire...
...Col nostro racconto siamo così giunti agli ottavi di
finale, che si svolsero il 9 aprile e che videro il Vado
trionfare nella sfida ligure fratricida contro il Molassana,
ultima squadra dell'hinterland genovese a resistere insieme
alla Rivarolese. Ma ecco il tabellone completo:

...Due settimane più tardi, il 23 aprile 1922, si
disputarono i quarti di finale, che videro all'opera però
solo 8 squadre: le altre avanzarono nel tabellone per
imprecisati favoritismi. Perchè il calcio, all'epoca, non
era solo sport ma l'espressione di un'intera società e
della politica...
Vado - Juventus Italia MI 2-0; Valenzana - Forti e Liberi
Forlì 3-0;Lucchese - Virtus Bologna4-0; Edera Trieste -
Udinese 0-3; Passano il turno per sorteggio, plausibilmente:
Pro Livorno, Novese, Libertas Firenze, Speranza Savona.
Ma il capolavoro del Vado non era ancora terminato..
...A causa di quelle promozioni ottenute senza giocare,
il Vado dovette disputare per la seconda volta un quarto di
finale!
La partita fu difficilissima, i rossoblù rischiarono più
volte il tracollo davanti alla Pro Livorno ma alla fine
ottennero il pass per le semifinali, e stavolta senza altre
trafile: il Vado era entrato ufficialmente fra le prime
quattro squadre d'Italia!

Il Vado rimase dunque l'unica
squadra ligure ancora in lizza per il titolo. Spiccano però
le defezioni dei campioni d'Italia in carica della Novese e
della Valenzana. La Libertas Firenze approdò così in
semifinale senza aver disputato nemmeno una partita! E
proprio i toscani sarebbero stati gli avversari del Vado
nelle semifinali...
...Siamo giunti al 25 Giugno
1922: passarono infatti quasi due mesi dalla disputa dei
quarti a quella delle semifinali. E anche le semifinali
furono agitate da qualche caso particolare: Udinese -
Lucchese, infatti, fu giocata due volte per un errore
tecnico. I friulani vinsero 4-3, ma batterono un rigore a
10 metri dalla porta anzichè a 11: il ricorso, pratica
molto in voga al tempo per questi pasticci regolamentari,
fu accettato. La seconda sfida però vide ancora
vincitrice la squadra bianconera, e il Vado, nell'altra
semifinale, regolò la Libertas Firenze ancora per 1-0,
mostrando una difesa ermetica e un'ottimo gioco di
rimessa.

9 luglio 1922
Udinese - Lucchese 1-0.
17 Luglio 1922: fu il giorno dell'assegnazione della
prima Coppa Italia, e la finale fu Vado- Udinese. Il
pronostico vide favoriti i friulani, dotati tecnicamente e
più esperti. I vadesi invece poterono contare sulla loro
freschezza e sull'entusiasmo che solo una squadra
proveniente dalla terza divisione può possedere. Nei
primi 90', l'Udinese attaccò furiosamente i rossoblù,
arroccati in area di rigore e salvati più volte dal
portiere. Lo 0-0 dei tempi regolamentari fu un raro
concentrato di emozioni e batticuore, ma anche un
antipasto di quei tempi supplementari che rimarranno nella
storia: in 30 minuti nessuno riuscì a segnare e
l'arbitro, applicando una regola che farebbe giustizia
anche nella nostra epoca, decretò l'inizio del
"tempo ad oltranza". Ma bastarono 7 giri di
lancette per mettere fine alla finale: l'Udinese, durante
l'ennesimo attacco fallito, martoriata dai crampi, subì
un velocissimo contropiede. Marchese lanciò Levratto, che
scambiò con Babboni II e dopo aver dribblato due
avversari scaricò un bolide dai 25 metri che bruciò
letteralmente il portiere. Nacque così il mito di
Levratto, lo sfondareti dal cuore buono, ma la cosa più
importante fu quel trofeo, dal sapore ancora rustico, che
venne sollevato per primo dal Vado, prima di Inter, Juve e
Milan. Un calcio di altri tempi, pieno di emozioni e
sorprese, molto diverso da quello di oggi...
1922 gave to the light one of those
competitions that anchors today it is fulcrum of the
national soccer activity: the Cup Italy. It's true, in the
last years this trophy has been trascured, becoming not too
brittle prestigious for the you tuck in. But the historical
charm of the national Cup can be relived going to flow that
gold bulletin-board that, as all the calciofilis will have
had occasion to perceive in the albums of figurines, sees
really in 1922 the triumph of the Vado fbc, a little team
militant then in Third Division. It was a success very
appreciated, that as it had to write the Gazette of the
Sport to the time, it was «the victory of the wish and the
youth on the technique». Yes, because the last adversary of
the rossoblùs was Udinese! But we go to see with order the
tappes of the by now legendary affirmation of Vado, starting
to know all the protagonists of that historian first trophy:

As you can notice, the lottery of
the participants included practically only teams of the
North and the Center Italia. It was a clear symptom of as
that soccers it was still in the age of the pioneers, but
Vado knew how to face those teams that then would have
become the elite of the Italian soccer within brief, making
to dream so a whole country...
... The
first day of the Cup developed the 2 April of 1922, and Vado
defeated the Flourishing Genoa with the score of 4-3.

Many were the derbies in that
fields of outskirts, where the dust and the sweat of the
soccer players it started to attract discreet insane back
the grungy enclosures. But the mechanism of the competition,
still not well done, brought to paradoxical situations, as
you draws for the passage to the following turn of some
teams (you see Pro Livorno) or "magic"
disappearances and apparitions in notice-board (you see
Libertas Firenze), as we will see in the third part of this
story. So many were therefore the factors that that first
trophy made special, but the most beautiful would still be
had to come...
With our story we are so reached
the eighth of final, that developed on April 9 and that they
saw the Vado to triumph in the challenge fratricidal ligure
against the Molassana, last team of the Genoese hinterland
to withstand together with the Rivarolese. But here is the

...Two weeks later, April 23 rd
1922, the quarters of final were disputed, that saw to the
work however only 8 teams: the other ones advanced in the
notice-board for undetermined favoritisms. Because the
soccer, to the epoch, it was not only sport but the
expression of a whole society and the politics...

drawing, reasonably: Pro Livorno, Novese, Libertas Firenze,

But
the masterpiece of the Vado was not finished yet...
... Because of those promotions
gotten without playing, Vado have to dispute for the
second time a quarter of final!
The game was difficult, the
rossoblùs risked more times the crash in front of the Pro
Livorno but at the end they got the pass for the
semifinals, and this time without other problems: Vado had
officially entered among the first four teams of Italy!

Vado was the only team ligure that remained still therefore
in list for the title. They detach however the defections of
the champions of Italy of the Novese and the Valenzana. The
Libertas Firenze landed so in semifinal without not having
even disputed a game! Really the Tuscans would have been the
adversaries of Vado to the semifinals...
... Passed almost two months from
the dispute of the quarters to that of the semifinals. And
also the semifinals had shaken from some particular case:
Udinese - Lucchese, in fact, was played twice for a
technical error. The friulanis won 4-3, but they beat a
rigor 10 meters away from the goal-line rather than to 11:
the appeal, practice a lot in fashion to the time for these
regulation pies, was approved. The second challenge however
still saw winning the team bianconero, and the Vado, in the
other semifinal, regulated the Libertas Firenze anchors for
1-0 showing a hermetic defense and a good game of
replacement.

July 17 th 1922: it was the day of
the assignment of the first Cup Italy, and the final was
Vado - Udinese. The prognostication saw favored the
friulanis, gifted technically and more experts. Instead the
vadesis could count on their freshness and on the enthusiasm
that only a team coming from the third division can possess.
In the first 90', the Udinese furiously attached the rossoblùs,
castled in area of rigor and saved more times from the
goalkeeper. The 0-0 of the regulamentar time was a rare
assembled of emotions and heartbeat, but also an appetizer
of that additional times that will remain in the history: in
30 minutes nobody succeeded in marking and the referee,
applying a rule that would also do justice in our epoch, it
decreed the beginning of the "time without
limits." But 7 turns of hands were enough for putting
elegant to the ending: the Udinese, during the nth failed
attack, tortured by the cramps, it suffered a fast attack.
Marchese launched Levratto, that exchanged with Babboni II
and after having dribbled two adversaries it unloaded a
meteor from the 25 meters that it literally burned the
goalkeeper. It was born so the myth of Levratto, the break
down net from the good heart but the thing most important it
was that trophy, from the rustic taste still, that was
lifted for first from Vado, before Inter, Juve and Milan. A
soccer of other times, full of emotions and surprises, very
different from that of today...
