Il calcio, a Pozzuoli, nacque grazie a stretti legami con l'Inghilterra. Nel 1886, infatti, in terra campana si insediò un cantiere anglosassone, ARMSTRONG-MITCHELL & COMPANY LTD di NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE. Questa comunità infuse alla Pozzuoli calcistica gli insegnamenti tecnici e la passione per la squadra necessari per praticare un football d'alto livello. E i supporters si attivarono in grande numero, donando ai loro beniamini l'appellativo di “Diavoli Rossi” (anch'esso ereditato da tradizione anglosassone, apparì per la prima volta sulla carta stampata (“Il Mezzogiorno) il 14 Dicembre 1921). In quegli anni, la Puteolana vinse tornei a grappoli arrivando all'Olimpo calcistico del tempo: il suo gioco tipicamente inglese e la sua vigoria atletica mise in difficoltà persino il grande Genoa. Il mitico campione rossoblù De Vecchi, impressionato dalla foga dei campani, definì Angelo Parodi (al termine di un Puteolana-Genoa del 1922) come “Figlio del Diavolo”.
La Puteolana giocò la sua prima partita su un terreno attiguo al cantiere "Armstrong" (dove oggi si trova il mercato ittico). Il secondo campo di gioco, invece, fu costruito alla Solfatara, ma ben presto fu abbandonato soprattutto a causa della prima guerra mondiale, ma anche per la scomodità da parte degli abitanti per raggiungere tale impianto( sul campo "Solfatara" oggi c'e' la piscina del camping). Ma il primo vero campo fu l' "ARMSTRONG". Fu proprio quel cantiere, quindi , il fulcro del calcio puteolano; gli inglesi, infatti, costruirono un campo a quei tempi invidiabile, che divenne grazie alla sua funzionalità, strutturazione e dimensione motivo di vanto del calcio flegreo. Il cantiere fu ubicato in via Miliscola, (dove oggi ha sede lo stabilimento della Pirelli), ed ebbe un campo dalle caratteristiche tipicamente inglesi. Le sue misure, infatti, furono di metri 65 X 110, e una vasta vegetazione di agrumi fu posta a recinzione del rettangolo di gioco. Questo campo permise, unico nel suo genere all'epoca, un tipo di gioco molto arioso e spettacolare, e quando nel 1919 la Puteolana lo ereditò dagli inglesi, spopolò in tutto il Meridione con il suo grande gioco fatto di improvvise aperture e fulminei contropiedi. Quel campo fu calcato da grandi campioni come Vojak, Sallustro, Fulvio Bernardini, dal grande Ferraris IV e dal grande GENOA di De Vecchi e Garbutt. (16/4/1922 Puteolana-Genoa 1-2 ; spettatori :4000, assiepati sulle scarse tribunette e addirittura sugli alberi!) L' "ARMSTRONG" fu teatro anche delle prime gare internazionali dei Diavoli Rossi,con l' URINEA TRICOLOR (oggi DINAMO BUCAREST) e con la "QUEEN ELIZABETH" squadra campione del Mediterraneo. (Puteolana-Queen Elizabeth si può definire il primo incontro internazionale Italia-Inghilterra). Questo campo fu tra i piu' caldi del Mezzogiorno, tanto che la recinzione fu più volte ricostruita a causa dell'eccessiva passione dei suoi tifosi capeggiati dai "Guappi", i pionieristici capi-ultras che oggi siamo soliti vedere.
The soccer, in Pozzuoli, was born thanks to narrow bonds with England. In 1886, in fact, in earth of Campania an Anglo-Saxon yard installed itself, ARMSTRONG-MITCHELL & COMPANY LTD of NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE. This community infused the technical teachings and the passion to the soccer to Pozzuoli for the team necessary to practise a football of high-level. And the supporters were activated in great number, giving the appellative to their beniaminis of „Red Devils "(also it inherited by Anglo-Saxon tradition, was seen for the first time on the printed paper („Il Mezzogiorno") December 14 th 1921). In those years, the Puteolana won tournaments to clusters reaching the soccer Olimpo of the time: her game typically English and her athletic vigor put even in difficulty the great Genoa. The mythical champion rossoblù De Vecchi, impressed by the heat of the campanis, defined Angelo Parodi (at the end of a 1922 Puteolana-Genoa) as „Child of the Devil ".
Puteolana played its first game on an adjoining ground to the yard "Armstrong" (where today the fish market is located). The second field of game, instead,was built to the Solfatara, but it was above all well soon abandoned because of the first world war, but also for the discomfort from the inhabitants to reach such plant (on the field "Solfatara" today there is the swimming pool of the camping). But the first true field was the "ARMSTRONG." It was really that yard, therefore, the fulcrum of the football puteolano; the English, in fact, built a field to that times enviable, that became thanks to its functionality, structuring and dimension motive for boast of the football flegreo. The yard was situated at the street Miliscola, (where today it has center the establishment of the Pirelli), and it typically had a field from the characteristics English. Its measures, in fact, were of meters 65 X 110, and a vast vegetation of citrus fruit was set to enclosure of the rectangle of game. This field allowed, only in its kind to the epoch, a type of very airy and spectacular game, and when in 1919 the Puteolana inherited it from the English, depopulated in the whole South with her great game made of sudden openings and rapid actions. That field was trodden by great champions as Vojak, Sallustro, Fulvio Bernardini, from the great Ferraris IV and from the great Genova of De Vecchi and Garbutt. (16/4/1922 Puteolana-Genova 1-2; spectators :4000, hedged in on the scarce tribune and even on the trees!) L' "ARMSTRONG" it was also theater of the first international competitions of the Red Devils,con the URINEA TRICOLOR (today Dynamo BUCAREST) and with her "QUEEN Elizabeth" team champion of the Mediterranean. (Puteolana-Queen Elizabeth the first meeting international Italy-England can be defined). This field was among the more' warm of the Mezzogiorno, so much that the enclosure was more times reconstructed because of the excessive passion of its fans led by the "Guappi", the pioneer ones head-ultras that today we are usual to see.
