Già dal 1900, cioè quando il calcio cominciò a diventare famoso in Italia, Gioia Tauro ebbe una sua squadra. La prima vera società si formò nel 1918: si trattò della "mitica" Gioiese (che portava una maglia a strisce verticali bianco e blu) che disputò inizialmente campionati con alterne vicende. Una delle prime formazioni che gli anziani sportivi ancora ricordano è quella del 1928 che partecipò al campionato di Prima Categoria. Il Presidente di quella pioneristica Gioiese fu Ugo Battaglini.

Il periodo di maggiore splendore lo si registrò a partire dal 1945/46, quando disputò il Campionato di Prima Divisione ( la C2 odierna ) e venne ripescata in serie C, campionato che si divideva allora in 12 gironi e aveva quindi una forte conntazione regionale. Nel 1947/48 la Gioiese del Presidente Cav. Cordopatri, guidata in campo dai forti Scarfò, Arbitrio e Pedullà, disputò una grande stagione, scontrandosi con alcune fra le più forti squadre del Sud che ancora oggi orbitano fra Serie A e B ( fra cui Reggina, Catania e Messina). La Gioiese, con poche risorse ma tanto entusiasmo, chiuse il campionato con 29 punti, in una zona tranquilla della classifica, ma fu retrocessa ugualmente in Promozione, in quanto in quell'anno la Lega decise di riformare i campionati riducendo il numero di squadre aventi diritto a partecipare alla nuova "Terza Serie".

Nello stesso periodo sorsero a Gioia altre formazioni calcistiche, ma, pur se prestigiose talune (Sallustro, Amatori, Battaglini) ebbero vita breve: gli sportivi portavano nel cuore solo il nome ed i colori della Gioiese.

Already from 1900, that is when the football started to become famous in Italy, Gioia Tauro had one team. The first true society was formed in 1918: it dealt with the "mythical" Gioiese (what it brought a strips sweater vertical white and blue) that initially disputed championships with alternate stories. One of the first formations that the elderly sporting still remember it is that of 1928 that it participated in the championship of First Category. The President of that Gioiese was Ugo Battaglini.

The period of greater shine was recorded beginning from 1945/46, when it disputed the Championship of First Division (the today's C2) and came in Serie C, sampled that it divided then in 12 groups and it had therefore a strong regional connotation. In 1947/48 the President Cav. Cordopatri, driven in field from the strong Scarfò, Arbitrio and Pedullà, disputed a great season, meeting with some among the strongest teams of the South that anchors today orbit among Serie Á and B (among which Reggina, Catania and Messina). The Gioiese, with few resources but so much enthusiasm, closed the championship with 29 points, in a calm zone of the classification, but is demoted equally in Promotion, in how much in that year the League decided to reform the championships reducing the number of teams right to participate in the new "Terza Serie."

In the same period rose to Gioia other soccer formations, but, also if prestigious some (Sallustro, Amatory, Battaglini) they had brief life: the sportsmen brought in the alone heart the name and the colors of the Gioiese.
